Suicide is the leading cause of death for Singaporean youth aged 10-29 for the sixth year running with schools and parents reporting rising cases of self-harm, suicide ideation and suicide attempts among youths the past few years.
Unfortunately, not enough is being done. Though this issue is acknowledged, the reasons for the growing suicides are often not discussed. No one wants to accept that Singapore's phenomenal economic growth comes with a price - Mental Wellness.
Children are struggling to cope with academic pressures and unreasonable parental expectations. We are in a rat race to be the best and it's claiming lives. It is a time we stop sweeping this issue under the rug and take action.
