The Representation Of Mental Health Issues In The Film
This film was produced, directed and written by Reena Deena who drew inspiration from her own mental health struggles which began at the age of 12. She has also struggled with self harm and suicide ideation. As a teacher, she mentors students struggling with similar issues and felt driven to make a film that sheds light on this pressing issue.
As the film deals with a dark subject matter and the actress was a young child, certain safety precautions were taken. Beatrix's mother was on set during all shoots and all scenes were approved by both parents before shooting. A mental health wellness check was done before and after shoots to ensure that the scenes had not impacted her negatively.
Most films about mental health weren't made from an authentic lived-in perspective unlike ours. Hence, they often sensationalized and vilified mental health issues which has caused irreparable harm. For this reason, our film does not show any graphic scenes as we are aiming for a sensitive portrayal of mental health struggles among youth.
