I was once a child like Valarie who battled mental health issues though my problems did not just stem from academic pressure. And today, as a tutor to children with learning needs, I see many children like Valarie whose battles with self-worth end in mental health struggles like anxiety and depression.
This is a story that needs to be told.
In our society, where we chase success at all costs, we reduce young children's worth to mere grades on paper resulting in an ever-increasing suicide rate among youths.
Parents refuse to see the impact their expectations have on their children until it is too late. They think that mental health issues among children do not exist. They think it is a result of being influenced by social media or an excuse to be lazy.
It is my hope that my film can raise awareness of not only mental health issues among children but also to educate parents that their unreasonable expectations might be a primary reason for such problems.
